Every southern city has its own take on southern delicacies that it’s proud to taunt as the best in the South and in Nashville, that’s Hot Chicken. But when in the south, it’s hard to find bbq, collards, and biscuits that won’t make you melt to the bone. And to wrap things up after you’ve had some hot chicken paired with a few local cocktails and live music, don’t forget to discover the rich history that Nashville has to offer through some of the most eclectic museum collections and preserved estates for you to see.

Ryman Auditorium/Grand Ole Opry

Ryman is called the “Mother Church of Country Music” and the birthplace of bluegrass so any show here is worth seeing. The weekly country music stage concert Grand Ole Opry has been performed at the Ryman weekly since 1925 which makes it the longest running radio broadcast in the US! It’s historic significance to not only the city but entire genres of music is so fascinating to learn about and even if a show isn’t intown a tour is well worth your time. The names of performers and special events held here is entirely too long to even begin to touch so do yourself a favor and experience the awe of the Ryman for yourself!

Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum/Johnny Cash Museum

Next we suggest a museum and here are two that would honestly be hard to choose from, so we went to both! The Country Music Hall of Fame is one of the largest music museums in the states! With more the 2.5 million artifacts and 350,000 sq feet of galleries to explore you could be here all day if you lose track of time! Everything from Elvis Presley’s gold Cadillac limo to Johnny Cash’s suits from The Johnny Cash Show. And if your a Cash fan you can check out his own museum that displays pictures and memorabilia from the life of this music icon!

The Parthenon

When you search for things to do in Nashville The Parthenon seems to always be in the top ten, which will tend to make people squint their eyes and say, “huuh”. Yes The Parthenon is a full scale replica of the Parthenon in Athens, but why? Why was a complete replica built in Nashville, Tennessee USA? Well the story goes that the decision to construct an exact replica in 1897 was influenced from Nashville being known as “the Athens of the South”. Therefore architect William Crawford Smith wanted to pay homage to Athens, Greece on Nashville’s centennial in 1897 by bringing (or replicating) a piece of Athens to Nashville. If you don’t care about the story it’s still a great place for a family photo and a picnic in the park.

Broadway

Whether Nashville is your weekend get away or it’s your first visit, chances are you’ll end up on broadway. Know as the Honky Tonk Highway, which sounds kind of scary, is the strip of bars with live music and cold drinks that are served all night, every day of the week. EVERY bar has a stage if not three, with someone on it at all times. As you begin to walk the strip you’ll find one that speaks to you but all are unique in their own way and can be a lot of fun is you don’t mind large crowds and live music! Many country stars began their careers on this strip and with live music running deep through this cities veins NOT ONE bar charges a cover free. So get out, have a few rounds, and enjoy what Nashville’s music scene has to offer!!

Belle Meade Plantation

An estate that shows how the ultra wealthy lived in the late 1800’s. The original greek-revivalist estate of over 5,400 acres was home to the Harding family, who regularly welcomes celebrities, presidents and important persons in business to the estate. While here your welcome to explore the antebellum interior and the grounds that were once home to the largest thoroughbred horse breeding farms.

Printers Alley

Now everyone knows Nashville as the Mecca of Country Music but it does have a bluesy side as well. Head to Printers Alley to find some of the best blues and jazz bars, street pubs, lounges, speakeasies, authentic cuisine and a little mischief! Printers Alley will always surprise a Nashville newcomer. You can find it paralleling Third and Fourth Ave and stretching from Church Street to Union Street.

Visit a local brewery or distillery

Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery is a pre-prohibition, family owned operation that was once one of the biggest names of bourbon in the south

Tennessee Brew Works – There are plenty of craft breweries in Nashville but when it comes to visiting the brewery itself, we love Tennessee Brew Works. The taproom, the food, the ambience, live music, sports, and great beers is what makes this our favorite brew to visit. Now granted we haven’t been to them all, but this one tops our list so far

Around 75 miles or 90 minutes is home to America’s top selling whiskey, Jack Daniel’s. Whether you’re a Jack drinker or not take the tour to gain an appreciation of the attention to detail that they take to produce this popular spirit!
