BEST PLACES TO GO IN JANUARY (COLD)!!


Right after all the family gatherings in December, a mini getaway in January would be good for the soul. Here we have made a compilation of the colder destinations that we recommend for this upcoming January. These suggestions are being shared in hopes that we can help you narrow down choices and brainstorm new places. Expand your horizons with a new place crossed off your bucket list and travel (btw check out this awesome scratch off bucket list map)!! We hope you get to treat yourself to a nice long weekend in any of these places to ring in the new year!!

Banff, Canada


If you haven’t heard of it you’ve definitely seen pictures of it. Banff National Park is one of the most jaw dropping scenic places in the world, no matter what time of year! In winter it becomes a fairy tale right out of Narnia with turquoise and emerald lakes, dramatic mountains, and evergreen forest all complemented by beautiful white powder all around! An adventurers utopia!

VV Suggests: Chateau Lake Louise, Banff Gondola, Any and all of the lakes (Moraine, Peyto, Minnewanka).

Bergen, Norway


Surrounded by the stunning landscape of seven mountains and fjords, Bergen is a charming laid back city perfect for those wanting to start the year in a harmonious state. All of this beautiful nature paired with a plethora of museums, world-class Scandinavian dining and the architecture and design of the city make Bergan and all in one destination.

Nagano, Japan


Full of mountains and home to monkeys that relax in hot springs, Nagano is nothing like the ultra-modern metropolis of Tokyo. Popular for winter sports and hot springs, Nagano is a place to visit if you want to relax in cooler weather. Visit one of Japan’s most popular Buddhist temples and castles while you snap some incredible photos of Japanese macaques relaxing in the hot natural springs!

Bavaria, Germany


Bavaria, home of the infamous Oktoberfest in Munich, has a variety of exciting activities throughout the state from the German alpine, Berchtesgaden to the infamous Neuschwanstein Castle in Fussen. During the winter months, many come to Bavaria to enjoy a plethora of sports, German beers, eccentric castles, and SO much more. If you’re looking for a place that has many different worlds wrapped into one, look no further!!

Reykjavik, Iceland


Iceland has become a popular place to visit lately and we’re here to say we agree with all the hype. To get a different taste of nature’s bounty, Iceland has insanely beautiful scenery of geysers, waterfalls, glaciers, and more. Enjoy the a scenic hike or visit to the hot springs during the day, then head out on a night on the town to get the full experience of this island!

Fairbanks, Alaska


A famous dog sled race, and Ice Art world championship, the northern lights, and so much more is waiting for you in beautiful Fairbanks, Alaska. Secluded in the interior of Alaska, with a diverse population of just over 30,000 allows visitors to immerse themselves into the spirit of the Alaska and explore the surrounding wilderness!

Saariselka, Finland

The main reason we are suggesting this place is because here you will see some of the best views of the infamous Northern Lights while staying at the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in glass igloo! The Northern Lights can be seen about 200 nights of the year so even if you don’t choose January for your trip here we’re sure you’ll get to see them!

Jackson, Wyoming

The town of Jackson mainly attracts the winter sport enthusiasts due to the three resorts that are established here. On the more relaxing end of the spectrum, Jackson has something for the art and nature lovers within their National Museum of Wildlife Art. If neither of these interest you, we are certain that you wouldn’t want to miss out on the Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park that are top American must sees.

Alta Badia, Italian Alps
